Questions of the week
Lt. Steve:
I was driving up 400 and a cop stopped me for speeding. There was traffic to my right so I pulled over to the left against the median wall. The officer was agitated with me and I didn't like his attitude. I couldn't pull over to the right because of the traffic. What should I have done? Was I dumb to do that?
Dear Dummy:
Having been there myself, I'm guessing the officer was a bit on the agitated side knowing that he was about to be run over. The only thing that would fit in that lane is a clown car so I'm sure half of yours and the cop's car, which of course is behind yours and will be the first one hit, was sticking out there to be hit by one of our fine drivers who just may be on his or her cell phone, texting something insignificant that could have waited.

Brinks Guard, Suspect Shot at Mall
A Brinks security guard was shot in the leg and a lone suspected gunman shot in the side and face in front of frightened holiday shoppers at Arbor Place Mall Monday, a law enforcement official confirmed for 11Alive News.
Ambulances transported the guard and suspect to area hospitals while authorities put the mall in lockdown, not allowing shoppers to enter or exit. Eventually, just after 1 p.m., shoppers were allowed to leave as police officers directed traffic at every entrance to the mall.
Police said the shooting took place in the rear entrance to the mall in front of a security office where the Brinks guard was taking his delivery. They found five shell casings at the scene. One shot went through a window in the food court, police said.

The juvenile suspect in the Oct. 11 armed robbery of the First Choice Community Bank on Chapel Hill Road had a charge of armed robbery bound over to Superior Court Thursday by Magistrate Judge Harold Lane.
The 16-year-old Fulton County resident was also denied bond on charges of motor vehicle theft and two counts of aggravated assault and received a $1,000 bond for a charge of criminal trespass.
According to officials, the aggravated assault charges relate to the suspect allegedly pointing a handgun at bank tellers during the robbery. On the day of the robbery, police arrested codefendant Uriahs Stinchcomb, but the juvenile suspect fled and was not apprehended until he turned himself in Tuesday to Atlanta police.

Water ban violators to lose water service
With the reservoir level continuing its rapid downward plunge, the Douglasville-Douglas County Water and Sewer Authority (WSA) announced Tuesday it is taking more severe conservation measures, including the immediate service cutoff to residents caught watering their lawns.
"Effective immediately, all water ban violators caught by a WSA-authorized representative watering their lawns will be shut off from water service on the spot," warned a Tuesday WSA announcement.
WSA also said it is cutting off service to all irrigation meters except those exempted by current Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD) rules. These exemptions include new lawns and landscaping installed by certified and licensed professional landscapers and retail garden centers. "WSA is increasing the number of afterhours roving patrols and has asked both the Douglasville Police Department and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office to continue reporting their observances of water ban violators," said Barbara Williams, WSA spokesperson. "We're not doing this to catch people, It's to conserve water and make sure people obey the restrictions."

Police hunting bank robber
One suspect is in custody and another is being sought by the Douglasville Police Department following a Thursday afternoon armed robbery at the First Choice Community Bank branch on Chapel Hill Road.
Around 3:30 p.m., a suspect described as a young black male robbed the bank with a gun while another suspect waited outside in the getaway car.
According to officials, a dye pack went off once the suspect reached the parking lot, and he dropped at least some of the money before entering the car. The two suspects then left the scene in a small late model Dodge car, according to Police Chief Joe Whisenant.

Man in pond drowned
A Douglasville man, whose body was found Sept. 26 in an Arbor Station subdivision pond, died of drowning, according to Douglas County Coroner Randy Daniel.
However, Daniel said officials still have not determined why Michael Davis, 46, East Field Drive, fell into the water. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) State Crime Lab is looking at blood and tissue samples to try and find any contributing factors in the death, Daniel said.
"The autopsy showed he had water in his lungs, which indicated he was alive when he fell in," Daniel said. Davis was last seen Sept. 24 leaving his job at Sam and Roscoe's restaurant on Douglas Boulevard where he was a waiter and bartender. However, he may have been alive as late as Tuesday, said Douglasville Police Major Oliver Fladrich. He said Davis had no significant injuries and money was found in Davis' pocket when the body was pulled from the pond, indicating robbery was not a motive.

Suspect killed in shootout identified
Police have identified the robbery suspect shot and killed last week by a Douglas County deputy as a 31-year-old Stone Mountain man who is a suspect in several armed robberies.
The suspect, Jnmarie Bryan, died of shotgun wounds to the head and neck early Friday morning in Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Bryan was shot late Thursday night by the deputy after he fired several times at the officer's car while being pursued along I-285 south of Atlanta.
Douglas County Chief Deputy Stan Copeland said the chase began shortly after 10 p.m. when Bryan's vehicle was spotted entering Interstate 20 after a robbery at Hampton Inn on Thornton Road. The robber hit the hotel clerk over the head with a pistol, and she was also treated at Emory. Bryan is suspected in an earlier armed robbery that night at Knight's Inn in Cobb County and a September robbery of a Subway sandwich shop on Thornton Road in Douglas County, Copeland said. Bryan may also be a suspect in other Cobb County robberies, he said.

Bond denied on trafficking charges
Three suspects facing drug trafficking charges were denied bond in Magistrate Court Friday by Judge Susan Camp.
Saul Diaz Valencia, Maria Torres and Jose Torres are all facing a charge of trafficking methamphetamine. The charges stem from a traffic stop that began when a deputy stopped a vehicle with a Texas tag to check for a window tint violation.
Following a K-9's search, over five ounces of methamphetamine and $5,000 were discovered in the vehicle, officials said. All three suspects had their cases bound over to a Superior Court judge Thursday morning by Judge Barbara Caldwell. Camp, the county's chief magistrate judge, had the authority to set bond for these charges.
